I start off with one of the most amazing observations which mankind has used to it's benefit as radio/television/mobiles/x-rays.
Wavelength is the distance between one point(trough/crest) to another point.
Frequency is the number of waves that passes per sec(1/lambda).Radiowaves have shortest frequency (highest wavelength) .
Speed of all electromagnetic wave is "c"(3*10 power 8).
Electromagnetic waves consist of electric and magnetic fields travelling at speed of light requiring no medium to travel(like sound or ocean wave).It has fluctuating electric and magnetic field which mutually recreate each other.
Let's start with basics from visible light
Radio waves: Highest wavelengh and can cut atmosphere. Hence used for radio/television.
They range from Kms to 30 cms.They carry signal from television to cellular phones,fm/am radio signal
Microwaves:The wavelenghts are measure in cms.Microwave towers can be used for transmitting telephone calls and computer data
Infrared: These are thermal /heat emitting wavelengths.These are also used by remote control.
Since all radiating bodies including human beings emit infrared readiation, it can be used to draw tempreature profile.
Visible Light:The only electromagnetic wave that we can see.Starts from red having longest wavelenght to violet the shortest wavelength.
Ultrviolet:Responsible for most of the sunburn.Most of them blocked by ozone.Scientists have deployed uv telescope like "Hubble Space Telescope"
X-Rays: It has shorter wavelenght and hence more energy(hc/lambda).Xray films can collect energy particles like photon. The fact that it passes through skin(more energetic) but not through bones finds usage in hospital. But it is not as energetic to damage human body like gamma rays
